Sun Safety

Sun Safety

Australia is renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant outdoor lifestyle, and abundant sunshine. However, with such a sun-soaked environment comes the need for vigilant sun safety. The Australian sun is intense, and protecting your skin and your little ones skin from harmful UV rays is crucial. Here’s a guide to sun safety to help you enjoy the outdoors while keeping your skin healthy.

Understanding UV Radiation

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can damage your skin and increase the risk of skin cancer. In Australia, the UV index is often high, even on cloudy days. UV radiation is divided into three types:

  1. UVA: Penetrates the skin deeply, contributing to skin aging and wrinkles.
  2. UVB: Affects the surface of the skin and is responsible for sunburn.
  3. UVC: The most dangerous but is mostly absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere and doesn’t reach the ground.

Check the UV Index
The UV Index provides information on the strength of UV radiation on a given day. Check the daily UV Index before heading outdoors. When it’s 3 or above, take extra sun protection

Be Mindful of Reflected UV Radiation
UV rays can reflect off surfaces like water, sand, and concrete, increasing your exposure. Always apply sunscreen, even if you’re in the shade or it’s cloudy.

Sun Safety for Children
Children’s skin is more sensitive and susceptible to UV damage. Follow these tips to protect young skin:

  • Dress children in long-sleeved shirts, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Use sunscreen designed for sensitive skin, and apply it generously.
  • Encourage play in shaded areas and limit direct sun exposure.

Being sun safe is very important personal cause to us! Which was a big driver around making practical sun safe swimwear. Not only to keep our child safe, but also a good way to start now with teaching her to be sun safe for the rest of her life!
